A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
